The Whalen patent covered both small arms and ordnance and involved a method of interchanging cylinders quickly. The cylinder pin, the same length as the cylinder and held within the cylinder by a light coil spring, was pushed out of the cylinder by another spring loaded pin. The cylinder would thus be supported on one end by the cylinder pin and the other by the push pin. (The modern Smith and Wesson revolvers work the same way!)

It is likely that no small arms were made on this system although at least one cannon was made.
